The fried egg jellyfish
Cotylorhiza tuberculata, popularly known as the fried egg jellyfish for its shape: a rounded, yellowish bell —like the yolk— ringed by a whitish edge, with short tentacles around it. It can reach up to 25-40 cm in diameter depending on the source. It is common in the Mediterranean during summer, and in Torrevieja it tends to appear along the coast in visible swarms, especially in warm waters.
It is practically harmless
Its sting has very little or no effect on most people — it is among the least stinging jellyfish there are. It also plays a positive role: it filters the water and helps keep it clean. Small fish and crabs even shelter among its tentacles. That doesn’t mean zero risk: in people with sensitive skin or allergies it can cause irritation, stinging or a mild allergic reaction.
When they appear
Their season runs from early summer to November, with a greater presence in the warmer months.
What to do if stung
- Do not rub the affected area
- Do not rinse with fresh water
- Rinse with vinegar
- Remove any visible tentacles with tweezers, without touching them with your hand
- If blisters, significant swelling or breathing difficulty occur, go to the health centre
